{"id":2562,"date":"2026-09-02T16:07:56","date_gmt":"2026-09-02T16:07:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/distantmeadows.com\/?page_id=2562"},"modified":"2026-09-02T16:13:26","modified_gmt":"2026-09-02T16:13:26","slug":"godot-engineer","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/distantmeadows.com\/en\/jobs\/godot-engineer\/","title":{"rendered":"Godot Engineer (Freelance or Full Time, d\/f\/m)"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<h1 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Godot Engineer (Freelance or Full-Time, d\/f\/m)<\/h1>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a Godot Engineer, you will be responsible for building our game worlds using the Godot Game Engine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the time of your employment, you will be working on our debut game,\u00a0Waters of Sal Nam\u00e9na, which presents unique challenges for an engineer through its combination of 2D and 3D graphics and its Game Boy-inspired aesthetic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Your Responsibilities<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Your main responsibilities will include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Architecture and Data Structures:<\/strong>\u00a0You will develop a robust and maintainable software architecture and design data structures that meet the requirements of our game.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>GDScript Programming:<\/strong>\u00a0You will implement gameplay systems, interactions, game logic, and user interfaces in GDScript.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Deployment:<\/strong>\u00a0You will prepare our game for different target platforms and ensure that builds can be created and tested reliably.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Version Control:<\/strong>\u00a0You will work with Git and maintain a clean and traceable version history.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What You Bring<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Fundamentals of Software Engineering:<\/strong>\u00a0You are familiar with the principles of Clean Code and understand how to keep code readable, testable, understandable, maintainable, scalable, and extensible. You understand the differences between declarative and imperative as well as statically and dynamically typed code, and are familiar with duck typing, type casting, object-oriented programming (inheritance, composition, polymorphism, encapsulation), and modularization. You should also have a good understanding of handling user input.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Fundamentals of Game Engineering:<\/strong>\u00a0You have knowledge of areas such as behavior trees, state machines, shaders, hierarchical modeling in computer graphics, tilemaps, collision systems, context-sensitive user input, input devices, animation, and rendering.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Working with the Godot Game Engine:<\/strong>\u00a0You are familiar with the Godot Editor and its fundamental data structures and classes, particularly the SceneTree, Scenes, Nodes, and Resources. You know how Groups, Shaders, Tools, Globals, and Signals are used, and understand how to implement hierarchical modeling, encapsulation, modularization, animation, collisions, and user input in Godot. Experience with Godot plugins and audio is a plus.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>UML Diagrams:<\/strong>\u00a0You can read UML diagrams and use them to express intended software architectures.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Structure and Organization:<\/strong>\u00a0You work in an organized manner and independently question the methods and structures we use to engineer our product.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Communication, Teamwork &amp; Ability to Give and Receive Feedback:<\/strong>\u00a0So-called \u201csoft skills\u201d are highly important to us. You are reflective, can articulate your thoughts clearly, bridge semantic gaps, and are open to giving and receiving constructive feedback.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Language:<\/strong>\u00a0You are fluent in either German or English and can use your chosen language for day-to-day communication within the team.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nice to Have<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Having experience or at least an interest in one or more of the following areas will make your application even more compelling. The disciplines are listed in descending order of our current priorities:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Shaders:<\/strong>\u00a0You can write shaders in Godot.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Godot Plugins:<\/strong>\u00a0You have experience with plugins such as Phantom Camera, Dialogic 2, LimboAI, G.U.I.D.E, or GodotSteam.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Unit Testing:<\/strong>\u00a0You have experience with unit testing and know how to reliably test critical components of a codebase.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>HTML, CSS, JavaScript:<\/strong>\u00a0You have experience with web development, particularly HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>C++:<\/strong>\u00a0You can write C++ code and, for example, contribute to the source code of Godot or its plugins.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What We Offer<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>32 to 40 hours per week<\/strong>\u00a0for permanent employment, depending on whether you are looking for part-time or full-time work<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Flexible working hours<\/strong>\u00a0through a combination of core hours and flexitime<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Freelance collaboration is also possible<\/strong>\u00a0as an alternative; scope and terms can be agreed upon individually<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to Apply<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Professional experience, references, and r\u00e9sum\u00e9s are not particularly important to us.
